Marianne Morris was a child when she discovered the power of images to communicate. Encouraged by a few special teachers, she continued to create through high school, and discovered life drawing in University. Convinced that painting was not a way to pay the bills, she pursued a career in commercial art, only finding her way back to painting when she had a child of her own who loved to create. She has since renewed her love of drawing the human form, and has focused her recent work on expressing her joy in all things musical. 

Traditional tools, supplemented with digital technology, stretch the possibilities for her images. Each painting starts with a photograph, drawing or a combination, and a piece of music. The backgrounds are painted intuitively, the soundtrack providing the inspiration. She uses whatever tool strikes her in the moment: sometimes paint is applied with a brush, but often it with her hands, a kitchen utensil, or something improvised. The photograph is used for reference as the form emerges from the background, final touches adding the details to the subject. 

Marianne has a BA from the University of Waterloo, and currently resides in Mississauga, Ontario.

Toni Poole

Toni Cintar-Poole has been involved in different aspects of the arts for over 30 years; music and theatre as well as visual arts.  She has always been ready to share her experiences and knowledge with school children, teens and adults alike, whether as a vocal coach, or as a watercolour artist and instructor.  Toni understands what motivates one to want to learn something new.  She is a giving and sensitive teacher.  Her clear way of communicating sets students at ease.


She, herself, is a consummate student and is always stretching her own creative boundaries by taking classes and workshops to explore new mediums and subjects.  Until recently, she has painted exclusively in Watercolour.  Toni has been experimenting with Acrylics and Soft Pastel.  She has been privileged to take instruction with Acrylic and mixed media artist, Caroline Said-Lawrence while in Malta.  She considers this a highlight on her art journey.  

Watercolour paintings have intrigued Toni for a long while.  She was "hooked" at the age of 12, when she did her first ‘water-activated’ set of ‘grown-up’ pictures.  Art took second place in her life as she raised her family. 

In Toni's own words: 

The pure colours and inner light of a subject rendered in watercolour never fails to captivate me. 

God's beautiful creation is a constant source of inspiration.  Looking at everyday things I try to capture their unique beauty and colour whether it's a flower, figures, still life and yes, even a fried egg still in the pan!  Just putting pigment and water on paper and watching the magic makes me wonderfully happy.  My hope is that you will see that wonder and joy in my paintings.

Doors Open London - September 28 & 29, 2013

This year the AGL will be participating in Doors Open Ontario and London Culture Days held on September 28 & 29th, 2013. (Saturday 10 - 6 and Sunday 11 - 4) 

We will have a host of activities going on at the gallery for the whole weekend.  There will be short step-by-step sampler classes, where the public can come and try out a class for FREE.

We will also have some of our resident artists at the gallery doing demonstrations of their unique style of painting.  It's sure to be a fun-filled weekend.

It's Hot, Hot, Hot!!! - Summer Sizzles at the AGL

Forty London and area artists are featured in the annual summer exhibition and sale at Art Gallery of Lambeth.

The Summer Sizzler art exhibition includes work in all mediums including mixed media, textiles, photography, sculptures and traditional art forms, such as oils, acrylics and pastels.

The show was juried by Lambeth gallery curators, Vivian Tserotas and Brenda Colley, along with associate artist, Philip Schmidt, which means the works must meet a certain standard for inclusion in the show, which features more than 80 pieces of art.

Awards were presented at the opening reception, Friday June 21.  Honourable Mention awards went to both Susanne Ouimet, "Eye See You",  and Candy McManiman, "Screech Owl".  

The  Best in Show was a unanimous vote, and went to Becca Smith for her pastel, Scarlett.  Becca has been painting in pastel since she was 9 years old.  At the age of 12, she began winning  awards for her work at  local art shows and county fairs.  She has been doing commission work since, but not showing her work publicly.  Becca has plans to show more of her work in the future.

“It is the expressed hope of the Art Gallery of Lambeth that this show brings about increased awareness of fine art and introduces London artists to the community-at-large,” said Tserotas.

“The Summer Sizzler provides a great opportunity for artists to exhibit and sell their work and also affords opportunity for the public to view a diverse array of exceptional artworks.

The show runs until July 27th.  Come and check it out!!

March Miniature Show

On Sunday March 10th, the AGL had the good fortune to have a beautiful spring day for their opening reception for their March Miniature Show and Sale.   Many joined us at the Art Gallery of Lambeth for an afternoon of warm drinks, good music, great company and precious miniature art work!  

The Art Gallery of Lambeth is pleased to announce their 3rd annual March Miniature Show.   The

exhibition will run from March 5 until April 6.

This year's exhibition was juried by Dr. Madeline Lennon, Professor Emeritus, and Department of Visual Arts at the University of Western Ontario.  Dr. Lennon was here to judge all the miniatures and present awards to the first place winner and 3 honourable mentions.

So just what is it that makes 'mini' artworks so

captivating? In an interview with American Art Collector Magazine, renowned

miniature painters Wes and Rachelle Siegrist explain it this way:

"Compared with conventional art shows, there is an

added appeal in a miniature art exhibition. It's the sense of wonderment and

awe, experienced by everyone present, as they are enchanted by these

diminutive jewels of the art world. You cannot casually walk by a miniature show or take

it in from across the room. Each work whispers for your intimate inspection and

rewards you when you take time to delight in it."

Valentine’s Painting Date

The Art Gallery of Lambeth’s new Paint Bar hosted its first Date Night this Valentine’s Day.  On Friday February 15, 2013, we offered  a special step-by-step painting date night.  Both parties painted onto a canvas side by side following along the easy step-by-step instructions. Each couple created two individual paintings that when hung side by side, make one painting.  Hung alone they make two!!!

To add some extra ambiance to the evening, the Paint Bar served a special Valentine’s Day wine along with a light snack.  

If you are looking for something new and creative to do, try out the Paint Bar.  Let the Art Gallery of Lambeth help you create memories while you paint together.  At the end of the evening you will have created a master piece that you can take home and hang on your wall along will a night of fun.

Feature Artist - Gayle Yanch

When watercolour specialist Gayle Yanch entered her painting Northern Shoreline into 'Twas The Art Before Christmas, the annual art show of the St. Thomas-Elgin Artists' Guild.....

She couldn't have guessed that she would win a Judge's Choice Award for her beguiling piece.

But award-winning artist & professional art juror Cathy Groulx.....

Who drove down from her Woodstock home to adjudicate the show.....

Surely could have guessed it.

Groulx was quite taken with Northern Shoreline, as was evidenced by her juror's notes which accompanied her award:

"Good use of mediums.  Lovely composition.  Draws the eye into the picture & holds it there."

Even to the casual observer, it is evident that a painting of this calibre isn't just slapdashed together.  It doesn't just happen.

So what thought processes went into the creation of this fine work? 

Yanch explains:

"When I first took a photo of this tree hanging over the shoreline, it was as if it was reaching out for something, or trying to be noticed by its special shape. 

As an artist I have always been amazed at the many shapes and forms trees take in the wild.  A tree amazes me - whether it's alive or just an old dead tree that has fallen over, or is about to fall over.

The curve and bend of the tree, along with the curve and flow of the shoreline, is what attracted me to paint this image. Every time I look back at the painting I feel the branches of the tree trying to reach down as if to take a drink of the water along the shoreline.

When deciding on how I was going to paint this image I knew right away that pen & ink was a must.  All the trees in the scene,  & especially the main one leaning over,  fit perfectly with my style of pen & ink. To finish the painting and make it complete,  I added a little bit of color into the trees and into the water.   This gave the picture a sense of balance that was missing when it was just black & white.  Adding just a touch of color to the rocky shoreline seemed to finish it.  The shoreline was now balanced with the sky."

The result is a red-ribbon wonderwork that is currently on display at the Art Gallery of Lambeth.  Congratulations, Gayle!
